Debit Card Car Rental South Africa: What You Need to Know

Published 1 October 2026 · By Car Rental Plus · 7 min read

Not everyone travelling in South Africa has a credit card, and it’s one of the most common questions we get: can I rent a car with just a debit card? The short answer is yes, at Car Rental Plus — but the rules differ from a credit card rental in a few important ways, and not every rental company offers it at all. Here’s exactly how it works.

Why Rental Companies Prefer Credit Cards

A credit card lets a rental company place an authorisation hold — a temporary reservation of funds — for the security deposit, which releases automatically after the vehicle is returned undamaged. A debit card moves real money out of your account for that same deposit, which is why debit card rentals typically involve a higher deposit amount and, in some cases, additional verification steps.

What You Need for a Debit Card Rental

Accepted

  • Debit card in the driver’s own name
  • Valid driver’s licence (1+ year)
  • SA ID or passport
  • A refundable security deposit held on the card

Watch out for

  • Prepaid or virtual cards
  • A card not in the driver’s own name
  • Our higher-value vehicle classes, which require two debit cards for the security deposit instead of one

Vehicle-class restrictions and the exact deposit amount vary, so it’s worth contacting us before booking to confirm the details for the specific vehicle and dates you have in mind — see our full car rental requirements guide for everything else you’ll need at collection.

How the Deposit Works

The deposit is refundable and released back to your account after the vehicle is returned in the same condition it was collected in, typically within a few business days depending on your bank. It is held, not spent — it exists purely to cover any damage, traffic fines, or e-toll charges incurred during the rental period. A clean return with a full tank means a full, prompt refund.

Tips for a Smooth Debit Card Rental

  1. Confirm before you book: Call or email us ahead of time to confirm your vehicle class accepts debit card payment and to get the exact deposit figure.
  2. Check your available balance: Make sure your account can comfortably absorb the deposit hold for the full rental period, not just the daily rate.
  3. Ask about two-card vehicles: If you’re booking one of our higher-value SUVs or executive vehicles, confirm in advance that you’ll have two debit cards available at collection.
  4. Inspect the vehicle carefully: Since your own funds are held against the deposit, a thorough walk-around at collection protects you just as much as it protects us.
